Travel through scenic countryside, lush tea plantations, and the beautiful Rwenzori region before venturing into one of Africa’s richest tropical rainforests.
Experience unforgettable chimpanzee tracking, discover the wildlife-rich Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, and conclude your adventure with a scenic tour of the stunning crater lakes before returning to Kampala.
Your safari begins with an early morning briefing before departing Kampala for the scenic drive west to Kibale Forest National Park, a journey of approximately five to six hours. Along the way, travel through traditional Ugandan villages where you’ll witness everyday rural life, with locals cultivating crops such as maize, beans, millet, and sorghum.
As the journey continues, the landscape transforms into rolling hills, picturesque farmlands, and the famous tea plantations surrounding Fort Portal, one of Uganda’s most beautiful towns. The stunning backdrop of the Rwenzori Mountains provides excellent opportunities for photography.
After lunch, continue to Kibale Forest National Park, internationally recognized for its remarkable biodiversity and exceptional concentration of primates. Depending on your arrival time, you may explore Fort Portal’s vibrant local markets and traditional basketry before checking in to your lodge to relax for the evening.
After an early breakfast, proceed to the Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority guides before beginning your chimpanzee trekking adventure.
Kibale Forest is home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 13 species of primates, making it one of the best destinations in Africa for primate viewing. As you trek through the tropical rainforest, you’ll have the opportunity to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat as they feed, play, and communicate.
Besides chimpanzees, you may encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, olive baboons, and numerous forest birds including the Great Blue Turaco, African Pitta, and crowned eagle.
After lunch, visit the nearby Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run conservation project famous for its rich biodiversity. A guided nature walk through the wetland offers opportunities to spot additional primates, colorful bird species, butterflies, bushbucks, otters, and various wetland plants while learning about local conservation initiatives.
Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
Following breakfast, enjoy a scenic excursion through the breathtaking crater lakes region surrounding Fort Portal. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, these beautiful lakes are surrounded by rolling hills, lush forests, and tea plantations, offering spectacular panoramic views and excellent photography opportunities.
After the tour, begin your return journey to Kampala with a stop for lunch en route. Arrive in Kampala in the late afternoon or early evening, bringing your unforgettable primate adventure to a close.
