Discover the incredible diversity of Rwanda on this six-day safari that combines the country’s three premier national parks into one unforgettable journey.
From the mist-covered slopes of Volcanoes National Park and the ancient rainforests of Nyungwe to the wildlife-rich savannahs of Akagera, this safari offers exceptional encounters with mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, the Big Five, and breathtaking landscapes.
It is the perfect itinerary for travelers seeking Rwanda’s finest wildlife, culture, and natural beauty.
Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional safari guide for a briefing before beginning your Rwandan adventure. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a guided tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most vibrant cities.
Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local craft markets, and cultural centres to gain insight into Rwanda’s remarkable history, resilience, and transformation. After lunch, depart for Volcanoes National Park, travelling through Rwanda’s scenic countryside, famously known as the “Land of a Thousand Hills.” Arrive at your lodge near the Virunga Mountains in the evening, where you can relax and prepare for the unforgettable gorilla trekking experience awaiting you the next day.
After an early breakfast, proceed to the Kinigi Park Headquarters for a briefing by Rwanda Development Board rangers before setting off on your gorilla trekking adventure. Accompanied by experienced guides, trek through the lush bamboo forests and volcanic slopes of Volcanoes National Park in search of one of the habituated mountain gorilla families. Once located, spend a memorable hour observing these gentle giants as they feed, groom, and interact in their natural habitat.
Following this extraordinary wildlife encounter, return from the forest and begin your scenic drive to the tranquil shores of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes. Check into your lakeside lodge and enjoy a relaxing evening overlooking the peaceful waters.
Wake up to beautiful views of Lake Kivu before embarking on a relaxing morning boat cruise across its calm waters. As you explore the lake, enjoy spectacular scenery, fishing villages, lush islands, and opportunities to observe a variety of bird species.
After the cruise, continue your journey south through Rwanda’s picturesque countryside toward Nyungwe National Park, passing rolling hills, tea plantations, and charming rural communities. Upon arrival, settle into your lodge nestled on the edge of one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and spend the evening preparing for the next day’s chimpanzee trekking adventure.
Rise early and head to the park headquarters for a briefing before entering Nyungwe Forest in search of its habituated chimpanzee communities. The guided trek offers excellent opportunities to observe these energetic primates as they swing through the trees, communicate, and forage in the dense rainforest. Along the way, you may also encounter black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, and numerous bird species.
In the afternoon, experience Nyungwe’s famous Canopy Walkway, suspended high above the forest floor and offering breathtaking panoramic views of the rainforest canopy, surrounding mountains, and abundant wildlife. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, depart Nyungwe National Park and journey east across Rwanda’s beautiful countryside toward Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only savannah park and home to the famous Big Five. The drive showcases the country’s diverse landscapes, from lush forests and rolling hills to open grasslands and wetlands. After checking into your lodge and enjoying lunch, head out on an exciting evening game drive. Explore the park’s varied ecosystems while searching for elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, lions, leopards, and, if you’re fortunate, the endangered black rhinoceros. Return to your lodge for dinner beneath the African night sky.
Begin your final day with an early morning game drive when wildlife is most active. Venture deeper into Akagera National Park to maximize your chances of spotting predators, large herbivores, and a remarkable variety of birdlife. Later, enjoy a scenic boat safari on Lake Ihema, where you’ll cruise alongside pods of hippos, enormous Nile crocodiles, and numerous water birds including African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, and cormorants.
After lunch, depart Akagera and return to Kigali through Rwanda’s scenic countryside. Upon arrival, your guide will transfer you to your hotel or Kigali International Airport, marking the end of your unforgettable Rwandan wildlife adventure.
