Your safari begins with a morning pick-up from Kigali, where you’ll meet your professional guide for a safari briefing before departing southwest towards Nyungwe National Park. The scenic drive takes you through Rwanda’s picturesque countryside, characterized by rolling hills, terraced farms, and vibrant rural communities that have earned the country its nickname, the “Land of a Thousand Hills.”
Along the journey, you may choose to visit the King’s Palace Museum in Nyanza, where you’ll learn about Rwanda’s rich cultural heritage, traditional monarchy, and historic architecture. After lunch en route, continue through beautiful tea-growing regions before arriving at Nyungwe National Park in the late afternoon. Check into your lodge and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the rainforest while preparing for the exciting primate adventures that await.
Rise early for breakfast before heading to the park headquarters for a briefing by experienced park rangers. Shortly afterward, venture into the ancient rainforest in search of one of Nyungwe’s habituated chimpanzee communities. The trek follows well-established forest trails through dense vegetation, where the sounds of birds and primates echo through the trees.
Once the chimpanzees are located, spend time observing these fascinating primates as they feed, communicate, swing through the forest canopy, and interact within their family groups. Besides chimpanzees, you may encounter other primates including black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, and blue monkeys. After lunch, enjoy a guided nature walk through the rainforest, where you’ll discover towering indigenous trees, colorful butterflies, medicinal plants, orchids, and an incredible variety of birdlife. Return to your lodge for dinner and a relaxing evening surrounded by the sounds of the forest.
Following breakfast, begin the day with one of Nyungwe’s most iconic attractions—the Canopy Walkway. Suspended approximately 70 metres above the forest floor and stretching over 160 metres across the lush valley, this thrilling walkway offers spectacular panoramic views of the rainforest canopy and provides a unique perspective of the park’s incredible biodiversity.
After the canopy adventure, continue on a guided hike along one of Nyungwe’s scenic waterfall trails.
The walk takes you through dense rainforest rich in wildlife before reaching a beautiful hidden waterfall surrounded by tropical vegetation. Later in the afternoon, visit a nearby tea plantation, where you’ll learn about Rwanda’s world-famous tea industry. Discover the journey from freshly picked tea leaves to the finished product while enjoying breathtaking views across the rolling tea fields and surrounding hills. Return to your lodge for your final evening in Nyungwe.
After a leisurely breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the scenic return journey to Kigali. As you travel through Rwanda’s breathtaking landscapes, enjoy one last opportunity to admire the country’s rolling hills, traditional villages, and beautiful countryside.
You may stop along the way for refreshments or to purchase locally made crafts and souvenirs before arriving in Kigali in the afternoon. Depending on your onward travel arrangements, your guide will transfer you to your hotel or Kigali International Airport, bringing your unforgettable Nyungwe Forest adventure to a memorable conclusion.
